Im looking for a good brand that will last me long, even though i might need to replace or repair some things somtimes, would you know any good brands that are trustworthy and have dirtbike models. i will mostly drive in the city, and it would be nice if i could carry 1 person with me somtimes, so the scooter has to be big enough for that. could anyone list the top 5 or top 3 brands and models of dirtbike scooters that will last me a long time and are not like those cheap chinese brands where everything will break down after 2 months.

Could anyone help me with this?

The problem is that, very often, the manufacturer-reported mpg’s are rather unrealistic for motorcycles, even more so than for cars. It’s difficult to find actual rider-reported data with decent sample size. In most countries motorcycle manufacturers don’t have to report fuel economy, hence there are no standards, hence comparability is much worse than for cars.

This is a list of the 50 most fuel efficient motorcycles under 500cc (from mixed sources):

Out of current 250cc motorcycles the Suzuki TU250X seems to be best, followed by the Honda Rebel 250 CMX250C. (I put more trust into the owner-reported figures, i.e. last column = O, than in the manufacturer-reported figures, i.e. last column = M.) You’ll also see that the Royal Enfield Bullet 500 seems to be very fuel-efficient – at least according to manufacturer data.

(Interestingly, they forgot about 500cc – because of that, some 500cc bikes are in the less than 500cc section and some 500cc bikes are in the more than 500cc section. A rather bizarre oversight.)

If you look at the source you will see that very few higher-cc models in the top 50 are owner-reported (last column = O) – most of them are manufacturer-reported (last column = M). But regardless of the source the BMW F650 seems to be one of the most efficient motorcycle with 500 or more cc. (I’ll return to that later on.)

http://www.spritmonitor.de/en/ is a German data base (also available in English language) for user-reported data. (Yes, the Germans love data.) They have many, many observations – which means the data are very precise.

Their data base does not contain observations on the Aprilia Shiver – the Aprilia Dorsoduro (unrestricted) has an average of 6.21 liters per 100km = 38 mpg (US).

Unfortunately they don’t provide such a ranking for motorcycles. What you can do though is sort the individual observations in their data base in ascending order:

Keep in mind that this is a ranking of individual observations – unfortunately NOT a ranking of each model’s average!

Here are a few 125cc model averages I’ve looked up:

Honda CBF125: 2.26l/100km = 104 mpg (US)
Honda CBR125R: 2.87l/100km = 82 mpg (US)
Hyosung GT125: 3.79l/100km = 62 mpg (US)
Suzuki Marauder GN125: 3.58l/100km = 66 mpg (US) (only one observation)
Yamaha YP125: 3.12l/100km = 75 mpg (US)
Yamaha YZF-R125: 2.71l/100km = 87 mpg (US)

For comparison a 125cc supersport bike: the Aprilia RS 125 has an average of 5.41l/100km = 43 mpg (US).

The Royal Enfield Bullet 500 (which has very low power for a 500cc engine, but the current model does have fuel injection, which, everything else equal, means better fuel economy) has an average of 3.61l/100km = 65 mpg (US).

The BMW F650 has an average of 4.30l/100km = 55 mpg (US). Very good for a 650cc bike, but worse than the Enfield.

According to the spritmonitor.de data, the Honda CB500, Honda CBF500, Honda CX500, Kawasaki ER-5, Kawasaki GPz500s (=Ninja 500R), Suzuki GS500, Suzuki GSF600, Suzuki GSR600, and the Suzuki SV650 all have worse fuel economy than the BMW F650 (and the Enfield).

Unfortunately there are no observations for some of the most interesting models (in general there are few data for 250cc models), such as the Honda CBR250R, Honda Rebel 250 CMX250C, Kawasaki Ninja 250R, Suzuki TU250X, or the Yamaha V-Star 250.

In particular, there is no data on the Kawasaki KLX 250S – that’s the one Kawasaki USA claims achieves 70 mpg = 3.36l/100km. http://www.motorcycle-usa.com/164/7756/Motorcycle-Article/2010-Kawasaki-KLX250S-Comparison.aspx reports that real-world mpg is only 56 = 4.20l/100km, i.e. it needs exactly 25% more fuel per distance traveled than Kawasaki claims. If that is true, then the Kawasaki KLX 250S actually needs 16% more fuel per distance traveled than the 500cc Enfield, and only 2% less than the 650cc BMW.

A final laugh: the Italian naked bike Benelli TNT 1130 has an average of 8.89l/100km = 26 mpg (US)
